Salesforce.com: Born to Collaborate— It’s in the Software
Salesforce.com is ranked number 27 on Fortune’s 2012 list of the 100 Best Companies to Work For. David Kaplan describes what happens inside the company.8
He explains that salesforce.com’s new social-networking app, Chatter, functions like a Facebook inside a company—and enhances corporate culture. Chatter is a dynamic and collaborative tool; e-mail, by comparison, is static and private. Employees can share work and ideas in real time on projects, analyze reports, and compare progress. Marc Benioff, CEO and founder of salesforce.com, has said that he “learned more about his company in a few months through using Chatter than he had in the previous three years.”
At salesforce.com itself—where there are more than three thousand daily Chatter posts, and where internal e-mails have decreased substantially since Chatter went live—there are groups such as Tribal Knowledge and Airing of Grievances designed to get employees across functions and ranks talking to each other about their work. Kaplan reports that employees who have worked at Google and Facebook say there is “less politics” at salesforce.com and it generates a degree of cooperation unseen at most large organizations.
When you think about it, by providing business software on the web as its core mission, the collaborative model that the company has with its customers engenders cross-functional collaboration with each customer as that person uses the salesforce.com software. Modeling use of these collaboration tools by the senior leadership is crucial to enabling their use and deriving the collaboration benefits.
